Van & Cody: Halong Bay Wedding

Aidan: Van and Cody chartered the beautiful Bhaya Junk for their wedding cruise around Halong Bay. The weather threatened a few times during preparations but it stayed dry so we could have the ceremony on the top deck just before sunset.

But the real treat was to come in the evening. We were transported by tender to one of the limestone Karsts where dinner was being served inside a cave! This is simply something you can not do in the West, come to SE Asia for your weddings!

The party went on into the early hours back on the boat with Tiger Bia and Jack Daniels a plenty. TIGER TIME…..YO!!

Aidan: Why have a wedding day when you can have two!

HANOI

The 10th October 2010 is a great date to have your wedding ceremony, however Hanoi decided to have its 1000 year anniversary on the same day. Whilst this didn’t cause us any problems, it meant we had to set the alarms for 0330hr to beat the traffic and head out of the city.

And it was really worth it! Nom Pagoda, a little over an hour from Hanoi, is a beautiful spot in a peaceful village. We had the opportunity for a morning photo shoot before the ceremony which was conducted by the monks who lived there, a very special ceremony and the first they had carried out there. Thanks to WedinStyle Wedding Planners for organising the day.

HALONG BAY

The next morning we headed off to Halong Bay, the weather was perfect and “Descending Dragon Bay” was glowing! A leisurely cruise around the bay on The Emotion was followed by a small ceremony and a big reception on the top deck of the boat.

Kat & Jason : Halong Bay wedding

Julian: I headed out to Halong Bay a few weeks to photograph the very, very intimate wedding of Kat and Jason. Their only guest was their friend Hollie, and I became their fourth wheel for the afternoon. Someone had to help create symmetry at the lunch table as Jason dined on fresh crabs and everyone enjoyed the amazing views from the boat slowly chugging past limestone cliffs in green waters. If it had to be me, then so be it.

But maybe it was a bit too intimate. In the funniest moment I’ve experienced at a wedding so far, during the ceremony the ad hoc celebrant asked Jason if he would take Hollie as his lawfully wedded wife. Yes, he asked if he wanted to marry the bridesmaid. Without missing a beat, Kat simply walked away and made as if to jump overboard. Classic.

VWP, another year older….

It is just over a year since we photographed together as VWP, and to celebrate this we have a wedding photography exhibition at Highway4 Restaurant and Bar, 5 Hang Tre, Hanoi. Running from 7th to 28th October we are displaying hundreds of images in collages on their ground floor.

Every single wedding has been a pleasure to be involved in, from China Beach in Danang to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Hoi An, Halong Bay and Luang Prabang; The Metropole and Inter Continental Hotels in Hanoi and the privilege of photographing The Prime Minister’s daughter’s wedding at The Caravelle in Ho Chi Minh City.

Upcoming dates include new venues for us; Khao Lak in Thailand, Siem Reap in Cambodia and the stunning Six Senses Hideaway near Nha Trang, Vietnam. This month we will be at The Park Hyatt in Saigon and The Sheraton in Hanoi.

Natalia & Jaroslaw : Hanoi & Halong Bay Wedding

Aidan: Natalia and Jaroslaw loved Hanoi so much when they visited two years ago that they brought their families over from Poland to get married here. A relaxing day cruising in Halong Bay was followed by a cyclo ride to a pagoda in The Botanical Gardens for a beautiful ceremony by the lake, with dinner at The Metropole. The wedding was made official by The Polish Embassy, their first ever wedding in Hanoi and champagne at The Opera House.

Aditya & Linda : Hanoi and Halong Engagement

Aidan & Justin: Aditya and Linda flew up from Indonesia to have their engagement photos shot in Hanoi and Halong Bay, just as the weather up here started to turn favorable after a winter of soggy, foggy photo sessions. Special thanks to associate snapper Justin who stepped as Julian was out the country collecting his photojournalist award.

Halong Bay Wedding: Thu Ha and David

Last weekend Aidan got about four hours sleep, between shooting and traveling he was working almost 40 hours to photograph a wedding in Halong Bay and an an hoi in Hanoi before capturing Vietnam’s football team making history in The Suzuki Cup. First up was David and Thu Ha’s lovely ceremony on board a junk boat in Halong Bay.

Unfortunately, the weather was wet. On a good day, Halong Bay is a breathtaking spectacal, on a rainy day, the fog rolls in and the magnificent scenery is completely obscured. Luckily, David, Thu Ha and the rest of the wedding party were in good spirits, and had a wonderful time on board. Why let a little weather ruin a wonderful day?

Ming and Hang : Halong Bay engagement shoot

Some couples are camera-shy. Some have a hard time being intimate in front of the camera. Not Ming and Hang. By the end of our shoot in Halong Bay, when we would ask them to kiss they were already at it, almost oblivious to the camera. In fact, a few times we had to ask them to stop so we could move ahead with another shot.

The day almost didn’t happen, as it was pouring rain when I awoke at 6am. Aidan called Vinh, our good friend and junkboat captain in Halong Bay, and Vinh advised us to postpone the shoot, as it looked like it would rain all day. Not one to argue with a seasoned mariner’s sense of weather, I suggested to our bride, Hang, that we reschedule. Since she had already been up since 4:30 to prepare for the day, she was understandably reluctant, and after a brief consultation with her family, decided to go for it.

Luckily, Hang’s intuition was spot-on. Our first few hours on the boat were heavily overcast, but the rain had already stopped and we could at least shoot above deck. And by the time we reached the beach, the sun popped out, giving us some beautiful late afternoon light to work with as Ming and Hang stepped into the water. Finally, sailing back to shore we got a brief but beautiful sunset. Everything worked out amazingly well, which leaves us with a few valuable lessons. 1- Never postpone or cancel unless absolutely necessary (ie: maybe shooting in a typhoon will actually produce great, unique images) and 2 – always trust a woman’s intuition.
