Tony & Nay Houy: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The traditional Khmer wedding is a long and colorful affair, a carefully choreographed event with many changes of spectacular colourful outfits. The ceremony begins in the morning at the home of the bride and is directed by the achar. Buddhist priests offer a short sermon and recite prayers of blessing. Parts of the ceremony involve ritual hair cutting and tying cotton threads soaked in holy water around the couple’s wrists.

I had never photographed a Khmer wedding before so was very excited when Tony contacted me to photograph their traditional wedding in Phnom Penh. Every wedding is unique but a Khmer wedding is particularly different and we had two wonderful and fun days in Phnom Penh at Nayhouy’s family house. Thank you to everyone for making me so welcome and I can’t wait for my next Khmer wedding!

Bryley & Brad: Nam Hai Wedding, Hoi An Vietnam

It still amazes me how couples can organise their own wedding, there is simply so much to arrange. But Bryley and Brad did it from another country at two different resorts, what talent!

The wedding was held at the famous Nam Hai Resort Hoi An and it was everything you would expect from such a prestigious resort, overlooking their palm tree lined pool and private beach. We then made our way back to The Palm Garden Resort Hoi An for dinner and dancing on the beach late into the night.

Superb organisation, stunning resorts, and great guests! Thanks to everyone for a really wonderful wedding.

Sarah & Lance : Hoi An wedding

Julian: Hoi An. I’m not sure what to say. I’ve been there a million times, and I know I should be over it, but…. despite the overenthusiastic vendors and the pervasive kitsch hanging like pesky vines covering the beautiful shophouses, I can’t help myself. It’s just…. lovely. Get out in the early morning or late evening for a photoshoot and you’re rewarded with the perfect picture of a town frozen in the past. It can be, well, timeless. Which is a pretty good thing for a wedding location.

Sarah and Lance held a wonderful, laid-back wedding affair in Hoi An this spring. And I think Sarah’s vintage-look 1940s wedding dress is now my all-time fave. Red Bridge once again proved itself the best venue in town, and big thanks to Nadine for helping organize everything. I’ll be back in Hoi An at least twice for weddings this year, and to be honest, I can’t wait to get back.

Nicole and Jon : Koh Samui wedding at The Cove

Julian: Nicole and Jon and their two amazing families flew from Australia to Koh Samui for a destination wedding last week. We’ve had a lot of unseasonal heavy rains in southern Thailand this year, and I was worried their affair at The Cove would be a wet one. But we lucked out with the weather, got sun all day long and only lost the outdoor dinner due to a brief downpour. I think at that point no one really minded. Spirits were being quaffed, and spirits were high. There was a stunning venue perched on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, there was one of the most hilarious and heartfelt father-of-the-bride speeches I’ll ever hear, and there was a young couple whose marriage was bringing together two families who already had an obvious and honest affection for eachother.

Siusin & Daniel : Siem Reap, Cambodia pre-wedding shoot – Day One

Julian: Angkor. There are no superlatives that can diminish its wonder. And even though we were there during Chinese New Year, with about 9 billion tour buses buzzing around the temple grounds, it’s still a place of magic – but not an easy place to make magic images. You want to make pictures at a certain time of day when the light is best, but so does everyone else. So you go to another temple, one of the less-visited temples, at a different time of day…. and there are still a ton of people there. So you try to be creative. Tight compositions. Tilt/shift to obscure messy backgrounds. Shoot into the sun when everyone else is looking in the opposite direction for that magic morning light that falls on the ancient stones. Get up at 4:30 to beat the people who think they are getting up early at 5:30. Be very, very patient, but shoot very, very quickly. And work with a wonderful couple who are game to try anything and shoot for two very long, but very fun days.

This was my first shoot back in Southeast Asia after a five-month hiatus in Canada. Thank you Siusin and Daniel for making it so special.

Marion & Camilla: Hanoi Wedding

Dom: As there are only 2 British consulates that offer civil ceremonies in Asia (Tokyo and Hanoi), Marion from Australia and Camilla from the UK decided on Vietnam as they love the city and it was also easy for their friends from Bangkok, Shanghai and Hong Kong to come and celebrate with them.

With Julian is Canada and Aidan on assignment in Nepal, a big thanks to Hanoi based photographer Dominic Blewett for helping us out with this colourful wedding!

Dominic: “The Ly Club s a great venue and they threw a fine party for their awesome and eclectic group of friends. Thankyou to all of them for making me very much a part of the celebrations rather than just an observer, chup su khoe! I wish Marion and Camilla and all their friends a happy and fun-filled future together.”

Van & Cody: Hon Tam Island

Aidan: “Can you ride a jetski?” I asked.

“Is it a sit down or stand up? If it’s a stand up I can ride it backwards!”

Meet one cool Californian couple; Cody, the rock n roll sushi chef and his beautiful wife Van whom I had the pleasure of seeing 5 days running in Hanoi, Halong Bay, Nha Trang (Hon Tam Island) and Ho Chi Minh City. We spent the day at Hon Tam Eco Green Resort off Nha Trang for a post wedding shoot, with beautiful weather, banana rice wine and a lot of laughs!

Van’s family come from Hanoi and HCMC so they decided to spend the whole week with their family and close friends travelling through Vietnam with their wedding in Halong Bay. Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome and a special mention to Haivenu Travel company for organising the trip so well.

10 seconds after taking this long exposure, the storm hit. Cody and Van had to scramble back along the rocks as the rain came down but they were duly rewarded after a long day with a 3 hour session in Hon Tam’s Spa!

Gareth & Phuong: Hanoi Wedding

Aidan: Our very good friends Gareth & Phuong got married in Hanoi last weekend. Phuong looked stunning in a white Ao Dai and we’re very much looking forward to the wedding reception in Goa, India next March.
